Institute of Mathematics and Informatics at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (IMI-BAS) is a leading Bulgarian center for research and training of highly qualified personnel. For more than 60 years, the Institute has conducted a targeted scientific and educational policy related to major trends in the development of mathematics, informatics and information technology. 184 researchers, working in 14 research stations are at the Institute presently. Research programs of IMI-BAS traditionally include interdisciplinary projects related to social applications of mathematics and informatics. The Institute provides excellent working conditions for established researchers as well as young scientists and graduate students. Over the past ten years at IMI-BAS hundreds of Bulgarian and foreign students have successfully completed graduate programs and more than 100 doctorates have successfully prepared and defended their dissertations. The Institute offers its research associates and guests all traditional and modern facilities for research, including one of the best academic libraries in Southeastern Europe. Associates of IMI-BAS actively participate in the preparation of the national teams of Bulgaria for international competitions in informatics. Informatics from IMI-BAS have taken active participation in preparing young Bulgarian talents and organizing national and international competitions, Olympiads and research programs.
The overall balance of honors from the participation of Bulgaria in the International Olympiads in Informatics from their founding in 1989 to today shows that our country ranks fifth in the world in total medals, 89 (after China, Poland, Russia and Romania). From 13 to 20 July 2014 the International Olympiad in Informatics was held in Taiwan, during which the Bulgarian team won two gold and one silver medals and ranked seventh in the world. The Bulgarian team ranked first in points at the Balkan Olympiad in informatics (10 to 16 August 2014, Ankara, Turkey) and won two gold and one silver medals. This year's Research Science Institute (RSI 2014), an international summer research program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for outstanding students in the field of natural sciences and mathematics, Hristo Stoyanov, a computer scientist from the Bulgarian Student Institute developed an informatics project, which ranked in the top five by the international jury.
